Immediate Denture

What are Immediate Dentures?

Immediate dentures are a type of denture that is placed in your mouth immediately after your natural teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth and are designed to look and feel like natural teeth.

An immediate denture is a transitory denture.  After the total extraction of a patient’s teeth, an immediate denture can be prepared to give back the power of mastication and lost esthetics after the extractions.  An immediate denture is made before the extraction of the teeth. Before the extractions, your denturist will take a mold of your mouth, prepare the denture and after the extractions are completed, will place the denture in the patient’s mouth.  It is adjusted and fitted to be as comfortable as possible.  The denturist works in close collaboration with the dentist to produce a denture that will offer the best fit.

As mentioned, an immediate denture is a transitory denture.  This is because the bone and the gums will eventually heal or resorb.  This will slowly loosen the immediate denture.  To this effect, the denturist will continue to follow-up with the patient to close any gaps formed during the healing process.  The healing process will take about a year to be complete.  After that time, the transitory immediate denture is then replaced with a permanent denture.

Benefits of Immediate Dentures

One of the main benefits of immediate dentures is that they provide you with a complete set of teeth immediately after your natural teeth have been removed. This means you don’t have to worry about being without teeth for a period of time.

Another benefit of immediate dentures is that they can help reduce swelling and bleeding after tooth extraction. This is because dentures act as a bandage, helping to protect the gums and reduce the amount of trauma caused by the extraction.

Immediate dentures can also help to improve your speech and ability to eat. It can be difficult to talk & chew properly without teeth. Immediate dentures help sto restore these functions, allowing you to eat & speak more comfortably.
